Abstract: 【Objective】 This study was conducted to investigate the effects of licorice extracts on growth performance, carcass traits and meat quality of fattening pigs.【Method】 240 hybrid pigs with similar weight of 60 kg were randomly divided into 4 groups with 3 replicates per group and 20 pigs per replicate. A basal diet without licorice extracts (the control group) and 3 experimental diets supplemented with 300, 600 and 900 mg/kg licorice extracts based on the basal diet, respectively, were used in this study. The experiment lasted for 12 weeks. 【Result】 There were no significant effects on average daily gain, average daily feed intake, feed/gain ratio or survival rate (P>0.05), however, pigs in 900 mg/kg licorice extracts group had the highest slaughter weight and average daily gain. Dressing percentage, lean percentage and carcass length of fattening pigs were not significantly different between the four groups (P>0.05). Lion muscle area of pigs in the 900 mg/kg licorice extracts group was significantly increased (P<0.05) compared with the control group. Protein and fat contents were increased after licorice extracts supplementation (P>0.05). There were no significant difference in the amino acids contents between four groups (P>0.05). C18:1 content of pigs in the 600 mg/kg licorice extracts group and 900 mg/kg licorice extracts group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P<0.05). Besides, there was a very significant line regression relationship between licorice extracts and C18:1 content (P<0.01). Unsaturated fatty acid content in pigs of 600 mg/kg licorice extracts group and 900 mg/kg licorice extracts group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P<0.05), saturated fatty acid contents of pigs in 600 mg/kg licorice extracts group and 900 mg/kg licorice extracts group were significantly lower than that of the control group (P<0.05). 【Conclusion】The addition of licorice extract into the basal diet of finishing pigs could improve loin muscle area, unsaturated fatty acid content and meat quality without altering growth performance in finishing pigs. According to growth performance and pork quality, the recommended dose of licorice extracts is 900 mg/kg in the present experiment.
