Abstract: The ecological environment of matsutake mushroom in Sichuan is special. The altituge above the sea level in the regions for growing Matsutake mushroom is 1900-3900 meters. The slope is steep with its maximum of 70 degrees. The regions belong to mountainous cold temnperate humidous (or semihumidous) climatic 20ne with their characteristics of high irradiance, low temperate, less difference in annwal temperature range and significant difference between the day-and-night temperatures. There exists an obvious alternation of dry and wet seasons during which fruiting body of Matsutake mushroon occurs. The vegetations in the regions are mainly composed of evergreen castanopsis and oak (Quercus aquifolioides. Q. panosa) brush, but not pine and China fir which are normally found in other Matsutake mushroom growing areas. Under the above environmemtal conditions Matsutake mushroom has got its both early harvest time, July-Scp-tember and market 2-3 months earlier in Sichuan than those in Japan. Matswtake mushroom with less pest-disease, stronger perfume and high quanlity is also obtained.
The discovery of the environmental conditions in Sichuan for gvowing Matsutake mushroom has expanded its distribution areas and plant symbiosis range, which thus provides a new subject for the studies on ecology of Matsutake mushroom and possiblities for the development of new Matsutake mushroom growing areas and semiartificial cultivation of Matsutake mushroom.
